Which island you pick determines every hour of your trip — the reef quality, the transfer time, the food style, the beach shape, the sunset direction. An honest Maldives quote has less to do with the hotel star rating and more to do with three questions:

Speedboat or seaplane transfer? Speedboat islands are 15-45 min from Malé (MLE) — cheaper, faster, but often more crowded. Seaplane islands are 30-45 min flight — spectacular arrival, more remote, but seaplanes don't fly at night.
Which meal plan? BB (bed & breakfast), HB (half board — breakfast + dinner), FB (full board), AI (all-inclusive — meals + drinks + activities). On a resort island where there is nowhere else to eat, AI is almost always the cheapest total spend.
Water villa or beach villa? Water villas are the Insta-shot but come at 40-70% premium. Beach villas often have direct beach and lagoon access with quicker snorkelling.
